Blog > An Olympic Apology

Author: Marco Ferrari

After nearly 17 years of marriage, I’ve become accustomed to admitting when I’m wrong and saying the magic word, sorry.  My wife constantly reminds me that this ‘self improvement’ as she calls it has made me a better man today.

As such, I’m very happy and willing to apologise publicly for all my previous cynicism about how London, and in particular the transport network which serves our Capital, would survive the onslaught of the Olympics.  Anyone who has worked with me over the last 12 months or so would tell you that I have gone on about the Olympics to the point of being very boring.  So, here goes.  I’m sorry, I got it wrong.

After the first week, I have to admit to being very surprised with just how smoothly things appear to be going.  Of course, there has been the odd traffic snarl up and broken down train here and there, but that’s what happens in a typical week in London.

As a regular commuter into London, I suspect I’m not alone in breathing a huge sigh of relief.  It’s great to see the world’s media and public focus on all the exciting sport, action and occasional controversy from the Olympics rather than how London’s transport network is coping.   Like most of us, I’m now fully behind team GB and feel huge pride that the UK and LOCOG have so far managed to put on such a great show and one of the best Olympics I can ever remember.

As we head into the second week of the games and the start of the Athletic events, I sincerely hope that this success continues.  I for one am now fully hooked on Olympic mania and I’m getting very excited about my own trip to the Olympic Park next week with my family.

I just hope that when the Olympics are over, the UK and London in particular hang on to all this positivity.   It’s infectious and I like it.
