Blog > Knowing how to drive

Author: Chris Wakley

Recently a well known and respected motoring writer suggested that electronic driver aids were taking away the responsibility and skills required for driving, and that the standard of driving had, as a consequence,  deteriorated as the level of electronic systems has  increased.

I’m inclined to take issue with him on that view. There are far more vehicles on the road than 20 years ago and yet the number of fatal road accidents is at an all time low. Yes, I agree we do still see some appalling examples of bad driving, but can that really all be blamed on intelligent electronics?

Having been exposed to active safety systems and how good they are, I do not believe, as has been suggested, that they divorce us from the art of car control or reduce concentration. Many of the really effective systems are active and not passive so they only react when things go wrong. ABS, traction control and ESC and future developments have already and will continue to make cars safer and more predictable to drive on what are going to be increasingly busy UK road networks.
