Blog > The Goodwood weekend

During my time in the UK of around two years, I have rarely seen so many visitors attending an event. However, the Goodwood Festival of Speed showed me just how many people in the UK love cars.
From a Ferrari 599 GTO to a SS Jaguar, no matter what kind of cars take your fancy, you could find them somewhere at Goodwood. Though I haven’t visited too many major motor shows so far, it is a really great show for petrolheads to visit and a festival for everyone to enjoy.
There were so many surprises: the air display, the motorbike stunt, the military tanks and helicopters. Though I struggled a bit under the strong sunshine to see who the final winner of the rally was, I enjoyed every little bit of the festival.
When walking through the Moving Motor Show, my friend – a journalist from Hong Kong – found it was very quiet there; no music, no models or hostesses, all the attention-grabbing efforts found at big motor shows were gone – the attention was just on the cars. I realised, perhaps this is a better way for car enthusiasts to really enjoy their cars. It was no surprise that the Ferrari and Rolls-Royce stands were crowded and I also liked finding out about the history of Jaguar and seeing some of their old pictures.
On the day, my friend and I were two of very few Asian people at the show. Though people in East Asia have an amazing car culture, I haven’t heard of anything similar to the Goodwood Festival of Speed that brings together so many cars and attracts so many visitors in the region. I’m not sure when, but I expecting some petrolheads in Asia will create an ‘Eastern Goodwood’ in the near future!

Hi Sheridan, thanks for your comment. I agree that Goodwood would be difficult to duplicate! However, I'm still expecting a similar kind of Asian automotive festival could soon happen. So I could write something about it then! |

Hi Judy - it's really special at Goodwood. History, cars, planes and all those people! It is unique and needs someone like Lord March (and his family and group of companies) to enable this to happen. So much planning, so many contacts, so many manufacturers, racing drivers and rock stars etc and so much atmosphere and famous faces, it would be difficult to duplicate... maybe in Singapore (I used to live there) leading up to the F1 event? Not sure when and how in Hong Kong (we used to live there, also!) but maybe in NT? It was good to read your article and that you enjoyed your visit. It's really special... you should also try the Goodwood Revival Meeting in September each year. |
