Blog > iTech, iTalk – maybe

This week we’ve all ‘upgraded’ our phones to – yes, very trendily – Apple’s notorious new iPhone 4. I say notorious since, unless you’ve recently been vacationing on Planet Zog, you cannot have failed to notice that a certain technical malfunction has been discovered on this latest piece of high tech wizardry – ie, if you hold it in the wrong place it doesn’t work!
Despite this, and largely thanks to the low-tech wizardry of our Financial Controller, who doubles as HR person, electrical expert and IT guru here, the transfer has been relatively painless for most of us. In fact, any little glitches along the way have been entirely due to the incompetence of our service provider (let me name and shame them – O2) rather than the phones themselves.
Of course, ‘phone’ is hardly an adequate name for today’s mobile devices, of whatever make. They are really computers which, amongst many other tasks, happen to serve as a phone too. In fact this humble function seems to have been a bit overlooked by designers of the latest models. Its quite refreshing for me, when I go to China, to use an old Nokia – long outdated – which is a phone and just a phone. It works brilliantly, is small and light and, as a phone, is a significant improvement on my pocket computer while of course not being able to undertake many functions I’ve now been educated to believe are indispensable.
I am absolutely not a ‘techno-Luddite’ (unlike some other members of our team!) but I do sometimes wonder if the relentless march of innovation, particularly in communications, is really to be 100% welcomed or not. Still, I’m now thirsting for my next ‘App’ – an enhancement which apparently can translate my speech into instant type. If you know what my handwriting is like this could be a godsend - I’m not known at ‘Doc Martin’ for nothing!
