I actually fell into it somewhat by accident. A very very long time ago I had just returned from travelling in south east Asia and was offered a part time job by my stepfather, Martin Hayes while I worked out what to do next. I was hired to do some admin and basically never left! Fast forward a few decades and I’m still here, albeit operating in a very different media landscape, but the fundamentals of the role and the people that make it so worthwhile are still the same and that’s what keeps me coming back for more.
t’s a juggling act really. Being a small business owner means you have to have a lot of wildly different skills, so each day is a combination of business activity, working with clients and managing our lovely team.
A long and detailed to do list! I have an absolutely terrible memory, if it’s not written down immediately it falls out of my brain.
I’d say the media landscape in the UK is incredibly diverse. We have a lot of heritage magazines and newspapers, working in tandem with digital media and a constantly widening influencer pool. It’s still incredibly exciting to match client needs with the channels they need to speak to their audiences – the thrill of successful campaigns never gets old no matter how it’s delivered.
Listen and learn. I never had any formal training, so everything meaningful Iearnt was from watching others and learning on the job. There are so many people who are passionate about our industry, they make great teachers for the next generation.
People! First, last and everything in the middle. Relationships with clients, journalists, influencers and each other is the number one thing that makes our industry such a great place to work and that keeps so many of us engaged for our whole careers. I’ve met some amazing, passionate and extremely quirky people over the last few decades and I feel very privileged to be a part of that community.
It’s hard to think of just one thing about London that I’d recommend, so I’ll gowith something that never gets old for me. Jump in a cab – central London atnight is absolutely magical!!
I’m a qualified mindfulness instructor.
